The Component of Love

As UX designers, we live and breathe components. We design them, build them, reuse them, break them, and sometimes, even curse them. But have you ever stopped to think how much a single component can truly change your life?

This Valentine’s Day, I’m highlighting one component that has undeniably shaped modern romance: the swipeable card stack. It’s the heart of countless dating apps, and it’s arguably this generation’s primary interface with finding love.

The Mechanics of the Swipe

The psychology of the swipe is fascinating. It taps into our natural inclination to make quick judgments. We’re bombarded with information, and the swipe allows us to efficiently filter what we find relevant or appealing. There’s also a gamification element at play. The potential for a match, the anticipation of seeing the next profile, the instant feedback – these elements can trigger a dopamine rush, making swiping surprisingly addictive. It’s a feedback loop that keeps us engaged, even if we’re not consciously aware of it

But are we good at it? Have you ever accidentally swiped left on ‘the one’? Swiping, like any skill, takes practice… and that’s where my new game, Swiper, comes in

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and we all know what that means: endless swiping on dating apps.

But are you swiping smart or just swiping ‘til you drop? Get your thumb in shape with Swiper, the emoji-matching game that’s like a training montage for your love life. Find the target emoji in a stack of cards (sound familiar?), and swipe left to discard.

Think you’ve got the skills to find “the one”? Put your reflexes to the test with Swiper – it might just improve your real-world swiping game. 😉
